Known as the “Crossroads of the Nation,” Schererville was a community where many routes intersected long ago, but now as a town with a bustling economy and a wealth of opportunity it is the intersection of home, work and happiness for many residents. With a population of 29,010 and growing according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Schererville has attracted relocating residents from throughout the state of Indiana and even some from neighboring Illinois with its stellar quality of life.
In 2007, Money Magazine named Schererville one of the “100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” and with its range of economic opportunities, strong arts and culture presence and interest in maintaining the historical significance of the area, it’s easy to see why residents are flocking to this community.
A town to thrive in
True to its roots, Schererville is located in Lake County at the crossroads of two very important byways: U.S. 30 and U.S. 41. Other important roadways such as the Borman Expressway and Interstate 65 are also located within an easily accessible proximity, making transportation in and out of Schererville quite manageable.
Like many of its Northwestern Indiana neighbors, manufacturing is a dominant industry in Schererville. Other popular industries include transportation and warehousing, retail trade and construction. Top employers for Lake County includ Usx Corp Labor Relations, Franciscan Saint Margaret Health, Community Hospital and Horseshoe Casino.
There is also a burgeoning local business environment in Schererville thanks in large part to the town’s active Chamber of Commerce. The organization hosts many events to boost awareness and support of local businesses including an annual golf outing, the AYCE Corn Roast and a Christkindlmarket.
The Lake Central School Corporation serves Schererville in addition to the surrounding towns of St. John and Dyer. The public school system consists of six elementary schools, three middle schools and a high school. There are also three private schools in Schererville: St. Michael School, Forest Ridge Academy and Hammond Baptist Schools.
Letting loose in Schererville
Life in Schererville isn’t just for hitting the books or staying on the clock. There are a number of amenities around town that encourage residents to take a breather and enjoy themselves. There are a number of parks and greenspace throughout the city including Redar Park, Rohrman Park and Stephen Park. Each park has a little something different to offer but among the activities residents enjoy here are picnicking, tennis, soccer, sand volleyball and ice skating in the winter.
Schererville is home to a vibrant downtown that is evocative of Mayberry. Every year the town celebrates its businesses and residents both past and present with the annual Celebrate Schererville Festival. The fete includes live music, carnival rides, bingo and a strong sampling of Schererville’s unique local businesses.
For a little retail therapy, residents can head to the Shops on Main on Indianapolis Boulevard. Here visitors can shop high end brands at nationally-known stores as well as enjoy fine dining and entertainment options.
