Known for its coastal ambience thanks to its location on the shores of Lake Michigan within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore area, Ogden Dunes is the perfect lakeside community where residents truly have it all. The small community has the laid-back vibe of a beach community, but is still able to offer opportunity and excitement thanks to its proximity to the bustling local communities of Valparaiso, Gary, and just a little bit farther out, the great city of Chicago.
This Porter County community may be small in size, but it’s mighty in character. The town formerly housed a famous ski jump at the Ogden Dune Ski Club, and was the site of many important competitions and training events for the sport of ski jumping. Although both the jump tower and ski club have since moved on, Ogden Dunes has managed to maintain its singular character.
Getting to know Ogden Dunes
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 1,110 people call Ogden Dunes home. The town is primarily a residential community, however many residents are able to make the short commute to neighboring communities for work and business.
Except for the border that meets the lake, Ogden Dunes is surrounded on all sides by the city of Portage. Many residents will travel here to take the South Shore Line passenger trains to and from Chicago. The city of Big Shoulders isn’t the only source of employment here, however. There is a vibrant mix of employment opportunities in and around Ogden Dunes. The most popular industries for employment include educational services; professional, scientific and technical services; healthcare and metal manufacturing according to City-data.com.
With a total area of 1.46 square miles, Ogden Dunes makes getting around town to various attractions and events a breeze. The town boasts very low traffic, which also allows for errands to be run on foot or bike if desired. The main thoroughfare here is historic U.S. Route 12, which connects the town’s southern edge to nearby communities such as Gary and Burns Harbor.

Many beautiful beach communities often have to deal with the ebb and flow of popular tourist seasons, however throughout the year Ogden Dunes manages to maintain its peace and quiet, making it the perfect tranquil spot to call home. What makes this community truly unique is that there are no hotels, restaurants or public beaches located within its borders, but that doesn’t mean the fun here is limited.
The various natural parks here offer activities such as nature walks, biking, fishing, swimming, kayaking and picnicking. Residents can do this all along the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as well as at nearby West Beach, Tolleston Dunes and Cowles Bog. The community also hosts a number of fun and interesting events all year long such as the Fireman’s Ball, Cardboard Boat Regatta and Chili Cook off just to name a few.
For a little more urban action, the city of Portage and other Porter County communities are always just a short drive away.
