With a name that translates to “the door,” it’s no secret that the city of La Porte was founded as a byway for explorers traveling through the region. However, since its auspicious beginnings that date all the way back to 1679, the city of La Porte has blossomed into the heart of an important metropolitan area in northwest Indiana that residents that love to call home.
Despite its long and celebrated history, La Porte is a city that embraces a youthful vigor of a young community. The U.S. Census Bureau reports a population of about 22,010 residents in La Porte, which is a figure that has been on the rise for the last decade. As the county seat of La Porte County, the city carries the importance of a center of government and there is no denying the vibrant chemistry of this wonderful community.
A dynamic place to live
The city’s website refers to La Porte as “The Hub of Awesome” and strolling through the downtown area it’s easy to understand why. There is always something going on in La Porte thanks to a very involved local government. Throughout the year there are weekly events such as Fitness Friday, a Farmers Market, Saturdays in the Sun, the Sunflower Fair and the Taste of La Porte.
The Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce also keeps that downtown area active by encouraging burgeoning businesses and local patronage. Throughout downtown there is a mix of shopping, art, antiques, service businesses and dining that keeps even longtime residents coming back again and again to explore.
Much like the majority of communities in La Porte County manufacturing, retail trade, healthcare and construction are very important industries for employment here. The top employers in La Porte include Blue Chip, Franciscan – Saint Anthony Health, IU Health La Porte Hospital, Sullair and Hearthside according to the Greater La Porte Economic Development Corporation.
The La Porte Community School Corporation serves approximately 6,500 students throughout various public schools located throughout the city including La Porte High School. There are also private schools available for all levels of students.
Recreation in La Porte
La Porte is home to an extensive city park district that prides itself on the wide array of amenities it provides to residents. There are a number of parks where visitors can enjoy activities such as picnicking, tennis, baseball, fishing, boating and hiking. Those who love to get out on the links can enjoy Legacy Hills Golf Club, Beechwood Golf Course and Briar Leaf Golf Club.
In addition to year-round activities, there are also a number of larger events that serve as highlights for the city of La Porte. The La Porte County Fair, which usually runs in mid July, consists of carnival attractions, a demolition derby, monster truck races and live musical performances. The Tour de La Porte is also a local favorite. This is an annual biking, running and walking event that helps to raise money and support residents suffering from cancer.
